About Us

Joyful Journey is a community-based not-for-profit organization committed to providing compassionate and loving adult day service that preserves the dignity and well-being of everyone who visits & provides encouragement and support to every caregiver. We were established so that families would have another option when it comes to compassionate care for their loved one who is unable to stay home alone during the day. Our purpose is not to replace the role and responsibilities of the main caregiver. Rather, we strive to provide relief and respite to the main caregiver in their unique and important role while providing safe and purposeful days for our Friends.

    What We Offer

While in the midst of their own caregiving experience, in 2013, Co-Founders Cathy and Gerard Benner were inspired to establish Joyful Journey. They personally understood the unmet needs of many caregivers in their community.

Frequently Asked Questions

Joyful Journey exists to create meaningful moments, activities and purposeful days for each Friend and family we serve. We build relationships around trust, integrity, dignity, and willing hearts, putting others first in a way that strengthens families and our entire community.

We are conveniently located at 600 Lindberg Road in West Lafayette, at the northwest corner of Lindberg and Salisbury.

Our Friends are older adults, currently being cared for at home by their family or friends, who need opportunities to engage socially, mentally, and physically. Friends may include:

  • Those experiencing cognitive and physical changes

  • Those with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia

  • Those with Parkinson’s disease

  • Those with Down syndrome

  • Those rehabilitating from illness or injury

Talk to us! We would love to discuss your particular situation. Each Friend goes through an assessment to make sure Joyful Journey is a good fit for everyone. We invite you to tour the house and see for yourself how we can be a daytime home away from home for your loved one and help you receive the support needed.

We are open Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:30 pm.

We do not have transportation but would like to help you find a community source that is suitable.

Our Staff understands the responsibility and nature of caring for your loved one. Compassion, care, and safety are our priorities. Although we are a non-medical, social adult day service provider, our Staff is trained in First Aid, CPR, AED, and best care techniques for those who need specialized attention. Our Friend/Staff ratio is 4-5 to 1.

Volunteers who visit with us regularly receive necessary training to help make their time at Joyful Journey meaningful for all.

While keeping in mind the safety and security of your loved one, our Staff and Volunteers will engage with Friends in appropriate and meaningful activities. You may find us working on a puzzle or playing a number of group games like bingo, corn hole, floor basketball, air hockey, or ping pong. Friends can relax in their favorite chair, read a good book, enjoy the outdoors on our patio, listen to music, or settle in at a craft table. During every visit, Friends will experience joy in their day and discover purpose in their life at whatever level they are able.

Lunchtime is a highlight of each day. From 11:30 to 12:30, we gather together around a welcoming table set with linens, china and silverware—just like visiting a friend’s or family member’s home—and enjoy a delicious and nutritious hot meal. All food is prepared by a chef at University Place, just down the road from us and kept hot in our kitchen until service. Everyone looks forward to the fresh baked bread, homemade desserts, fresh fruits and vegetables, and delicious entrées.

Morning and afternoon snacks are also provided.

We recognize that some Friends will need assistance with some tasks. If they need assistance in the restroom, we can help. If they are in need of help at meal time, we can do that, too. If your loved one needs medication while at our house, we are able to safely store medicine and dispense it at the proper time. Friends do need to be able to swallow or make injections without assistance. Joyful Journey also has available an ADA-compliant, wheel-in shower where we can provide scheduled bathing assistance. Please talk to us about any specific assistance your loved one may need.

Friends sign up for full days, partial days, individual days, or full weeks.

  • Full days (over 4 hours) are $92 each and include lunch, morning and afternoon snacks, and all activities.

  • Partial days (4 hours or less) are $67 each. Lunch can be purchased for an additional $5.

Some Long-Term Care Insurance policies cover specific Adult Day Service fees. Joyful Journey accepts Medicaid Waiver payments and has some scholarship money available. Medicare does not provide payment for Adult Day Services.

I had been anxiously awaiting the opening of this wonderful home for some time to aid in the care of my husband but also for me, too. My husband has been coming from the very first week and he goes several times a week. He enjoys the many activities, other people attending, the very caring and professional Staff, and of course, the delicious meals.

I can now plan to have some "Connie Time" which is such a blessing to my health and attitude. I highly recommend you bring your loved one to Joyful Journey, and I know you won't be sorry!

Connie

It's so comforting to know my mom will enjoy her day, every day, surrounded by caring Staff in a safe, warm place. She looks forward to her time with her friends and tells everyone she knows how wonderful Joyful Journey is.

For me, I get peace and encouragement as soon as I connect with staff and others I meet there. It's a perfect fit, and it came at just the right time. What a blessing Joyful Journey is!

Amy

The Joyful Journey Staff does not view caring for their friend as simply a job, rather they warmly welcome each friend and treat him/her respectfully as a person.

Having mom at Joyful Journey a couple afternoons per week has allowed me to get groceries, run errands, go to my own doctor and dentist appointments, spend time with my children, have a luncheon date with my husband, etc. all without Mom along—knowing that she is in good hands.

Joyful Journey gives Mom appropriate activities and individual attention; Joyful Journey gives me opportunities to tend other relationships and other necessary tasks—what a respite in the midst of full-time caregiving!

Leslie

As an administrative volunteer I have many opportunities to see JJ Staff at work. Their preparations are always thoughtful, caring, and thorough. Activities are often individualized to the unique needs of a particular Friend, and always appropriate and purposeful for the group they expect to see the next day.

If the day's plan is not working well, the trained and experienced Staff and volunteers are flexible and ready to change course. Everyone is included unless they would like some time for themselves, which can be provided while never leaving anyone alone. The level of loving care provided in this home away from home is a rare find!
