Volunteer Philosophy

What We Believe

Volunteers are vital to our success. Their special skills and talents add variety, depth, and quality to a day at Joyful Journey...For Friends, Staff, and other Volunteers.

Our Volunteers are partners in our mission and will benefit from their time with us as much as we benefit from their contributions.

Group Exercise Facilitator

Lead specific exercises with a group of Friends and Staff. Exercise examples include: stretching, chair yoga, chair qi gong, chair aerobics, etc.

Sing-a-Long Leader

Bring the gift of song to Friends where they can participate in the singing. Assure written words are available for those who can follow written lyrics. Create a list of songs based on a theme e.g. patriotic, seasonal, holiday, faith-based, genre, etc.

Photographer

Regularly take photographs of those Friends with proper releases, Staff, Volunteers and special events at Joyful Journey. Photos will be used for internal communication, community outreach, marketing materials, and newsletters to families.

Game Facilitator

Facilitate playing games such as trivia, Pictionary, bingo, cards, board games, naming games, etc. Or, play an adapted sport side-by-side with a Friend for basic enjoyment and exercise. Options include noodle ball, ping pong, ring toss, shooting hoops/basketball (indoor), golf putting, Wii bowling/tennis/baseball, catch, bocce ball, balloon volleyball.

Back Up Receptionist

Greet Friends and Caregivers as well as other Volunteers to assure they feel welcome. Answer telephone: screen and direct calls, take and relay messages and provide basic information to callers. Greet Visitors and provide information or connect them to others who can help. Keep the reception area tidy.

Spend time with an individual Friend focused on that Friend’s special interests e.g. reading, talking, story-telling, strolling indoors or outdoors, a game, etc.

Joyful Journey was a safe haven where my mother could go to have an engaging day of conversations, games, singing, crafts and more. Sometimes when I came to pick her up, I would peek in without her noticing and see the mom I knew before Alzheimers began to take her away … The warm, wonderful, patient people who work there know how to make their "Friends" feel at home.
